The flow level of the San Juan River is currently at 487 cfs. However, the US Bureau of Reclamation has recently announced that the flow level on the San Juan River will be increased to 800 cfs on July 8 in order to comply with the Endangered Species Act. This is good news as the increased flows will help San Juan River, the fish that inhabit it and their habitat. The water clarity may be a little cloudy for a couple of days after the increase but will clear quickly.
As of now, the water is clear and the river looks great after the spring flush. In addition to the usual midge hatches, the San Juan River is seeing Blue Winged Olives (Baetis) and evening Caddis hatches on the Lower River. After the morning, the fish are focusing on BWO patterns and are moving into the riffles to feed on these insects. When overcast, the BWO hatches have been strong.
